What are boxing shorts?

Boxer shorts (also known as loose boxers or as simply boxers) are a type of undergarment typically worn by men. The term has been used in English since 1944 for all-around-elastic shorts, so named after the shorts worn by boxers, for whom unhindered leg movement (“footwork”) is very important.

 

Why are boxing shorts so high?

As I mentioned above, one of the core reasons for boxers wearing their shorts high is to protect themselves from body blows by riding up the shorts. Although the shorts’ height technically does not determine which blows are legal, this trick can confuse the opponent and the referee. Not only will the opponent have difficulty finding areas, which are legal to punch, but the referee might also even declare a punch above the imaginary line illegal as that area of the body isn’t visible.  Even if the referee makes the correct call, the crowd will surely start howling their eyes; it will be a foul.

One of the reasons for this is the discomfort that the bulk of the groin protector brings. The groin protector is worn pretty high and wearing your shorts lower than it would result in a restriction when it comes to your leg movements. Although this is a legitimate reason for wearing the shorts relatively high, some boxers exaggerate this to use the trick mentioned above.

Another important reason for wearing your shorts high is to boost mobility. Often, if baggy shorts are hanging too low, they restrict the legs’ movement, which is naturally undesirable for a boxer. Furthermore, using your shorts to cover your lower belly will add a layer of protection, which may prevent you from getting winded by any blows directed toward your belly.

Boxer shorts are made from many different materials. Most briefs are made of cotton or a cotton-Spandex blend. In hotter climates, more breathable cotton blends may be the best choice. In a colder climate, the more insulating wool and flannel varieties are good options.
